Mega Cities

"The world's mega-cities are merging to form vast "mega-regions" which may stretch hundreds of kilometres across countries and be home to more than 100 million people."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/22/un-cities-mega-regions

I'm sure it doesn't take a UN report to tell us that when cities keep expanding eventually they will meet but it is a really horrible thought not being able to escape from the concrete jungle for miles and miles.

The massive growth of the population over the last 100 or so years, in fact the increase is so much that people have seen the world population double in their lifetime from just over 3 billion in 1960 to over 6 billion in 2008. This is down to the reduction in disease rates and agricultural advancements. This only heightens the rate at which our cities spread out eating up what was once green breathing space.

The disappearance of countryside in UK

I would hate to live anywhere in which I could not easily walk into the peacefulness of the countryside. This is one of the reasons why I chose Brighton over London to study because it has lots of rolling hills to the north and the beach to the south. In which I can go and escape to in my free time after being trapped up in a building all week.

I think as kids we all looked forwards to family trips to country parks, walking the dog, taking a picnic, walks through forests and just appreciating what nature has to offer. Even on the days where the weather isn't so great the greenery always does a good job to brighten it up. It does the soul good to get outside and all those problems that you could spent hours worrying about in the office are put into perspective.
Walks around the UK

I think it is a great shame when people don't know the area around them, simply jumping into the car and driving them same routes to work, shopping centre and everyday destinations. Have a sense of adventure and when you have a day free instead of sitting down staring at a screen all day go out and experience your surroundings. You don't have to live near a well known designated walking route to go exploring. I have been surprised many times what I have found when I go out even just around the edges of the town.

A note of caution that while most places are safe there will always be those that aren't make sure that if you are walking through farmland/ fields that they are not privately owned. There may be a reason the field is not open to the public like if animals are kept there they may not always be friendly. Also take care when taking on steeper terrain and if the path looks a too bigger risk turn back especially if you have no-one with you.
