A good film in my view is one that is able to get you thinking and stimulates multiple emotions. 'The Boy In Striped Pyjamas' [Mark Herman] does both the above in bucket loads. Based of the story of the same title, it is set in Nazi Germany during the second world war and the main characters are a Nazi commander and his family.
Initially it was slightly confusing that all the characters had English accents but you learn to look past that fairly quickly.
I recommend watching the film as I believe it really puts the events of the Holocaust into a frighteningly real perspective. I think the film was historically accurate which made it even more chilling. It left me wondering what would happen until about the last 15 minutes when the ending is virtually given to the audience leaving them with a sense of dread.
The main theme of the film is truth, there are many examples that can be given including the level of understanding of the two Children of the events that were happening in the concentration camps. Like in the real Nazi education children were taught that the Nazi regime was right and that the Jews were the enemy.
The boys meetings between the fence shown how little both sides knew about the truth, Bruno (commandants son) was seeing the truth but still never understood the whole story, he clearly was used to a very sheltered childhood. The way the film ends really makes you think about the way you view people differently and who you end up feeling most sympathy for.
So all in all if you like a little bit of drama this one definitely provides that, and you won't be able to get it out your mind for at least a couple of days. Like this sort of film? Another one I recommend seeing is 'The Pianist' [Roman Polanski].
