Mums the word

Today is mothering Sunday in England, most other countries also have a similar tradition celebrated mostly at some point from March through until May. The modern mothers day here usually consists of the following; A 5 minute card opening session and a day off from

all the usual household task (not that they don't still need doing). Nothing that special.

Really though I'm not that interested in the day itself, it's a good thing to do, it's nice for mums to be given appreciation for all that they do. I can't speak for every household but traditionally the wife/ mother does the majority of household chores and general every day running, it was certainly that case in my home.

Although attitudes have certainly changed over the past 40 or 50 years,  in a lot of cases it is still the wife who does the majority of the childcare and housework whether she also works or not. The husband is often seen at the provider, putting everything in place for the family i.e. family finances, DIY etc.

Maybe these roles just play to the strengths of each gender, who knows but what is important is that mum isn't left to do absolutely everything. A recent TV programme on C4 filmed a few couples and families for a week to analyse how long each spouse spent on various tasks. I guess you would act a little differently knowing there are cameras about but it certainly highlighted some clear trends.

Mainly that it was the women that did a lot of the less desirable household work. It shouldn't be just the one Sunday a year in which mums are thanked, if you live with family and find yourself flicking through the TV channels while mum is still at the kitchen sink then spare a thought get up and help, she deserves free time as much as you. Until next time.
