Occasionally when browsing the web I come across something
eye opening and today was one of them days. This 'competition' is to win an
iPhone, with profit making competitions you expect for there to be a good
profit margin for the competition holders (like the phone-in competitions on
TV). But this one takes the biscuit…
I initially came across it as it completely blocked me
out of this website and I was unable to get rid of the message. It is the first time I have ever been fully blocked from a website by what is effectively an advert. It asks you to
fill out a survey about the iPhone, which is fair enough. First thoughts were
that maybe they are being paid to collect data in return for the content they
provide.
Alarm bells always ring when brand names like “iPhone 4S” but I clicked anyway to see what it was all about. It takes you to the start of this quiz (not survey as it stated earlier) and asks “Is it possible to video call with the 4S?” after you answer it asks you to fill out your phone number to receive more of these rubbish questions.
Looking in the small print you notice that to do this it will cost you £3 per question on top of which is a £3 ‘sign up fee’. This competition runs until March next year when the top 50 people who have wasted the most amount of money answering these questions will be entered into the next stage.
If you are unfortunate enough to make the next stage, this consists of an additional open-ended question. Again they charge you an extra £3 for the question plus another £3 sign up fee. If you then guess closest then you win the iPhone (assuming it actually exists), worth about £300.
Given that to even be with a chance of winning it must take at least 15 texts to get past round one you are effectively gambling £50/£60 that your answer will be closer than 49 others just to win an iPhone. Insanity.
I can’t believe people would really play these things; it’s just day light robbery. Clearly somebody does as else why would they still exist? Maybe they might trick a few people into entering their phone number without reading the terms. Never go near these in a million years. You have much better chances down the bookies!
(Luckily I could still get to the website with a simple modification to the source code!)
