Now on their 6th album Snow Patrol is one of the biggest Indie bands in the UK of the past decade. So the question: does Fallen Empires live up to expectations?
As big fan of Snow Patrol it does concern me that they may have released career best albums with Final Straw and Eyes Open. Their last album A Hundred Million Suns didn’t really take back the city though still being a thoroughly listenable album. It didn’t really have any songs that really stuck out.
Fallen Empires has an electronic edge and the band used choirs as backing throughout the album. The electro-Indie-rock area is one that many bands have explored so it is a difficult area to stand out from the rest. The album is a departure from their previous but still retains that Snow Patrol magic; more time was spent on this album than their entire discography put together.
Songs that stick out for me are: The Garden Rules, with a smooth bass line and backing from Lissie it is a song that makes your heart melt. Lissie, an artist previously unknown to me, also contributes to several other songs on the album. Her input definitely adds to the Snow Patrol sound.
The title track Fallen Empires is the catchiest song on the album with a long gradual build up to the climax of the song. The second half of the song repeatedly repeats ‘we are the light’ giving a sense of empowerment and reaches out to the listener.
Overall I would give the album 8.5 / 10. All round a very powerful album but perhaps not a future classic in this fast paced music industry right now. Only time will tell.
