Courage is a quality allows someone to push themselves outside of their comfort zone. Normally used to describe an act of bravery such as risking ones own well being to save someone else. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as diving in front of a bullet to require courage. It can be something as small having the courage to make a difficult phone call or to tell someone the truth.
As a side note before the main point of the post, it can also be said that courage, as well as being associated with good is a quality that’s needed for injustice too. Actions such as breaking into a house or starting a riot aren’t exactly done by scared and shy individuals. Not that you would normally call rioters courageous, unless you were writing for a very biased newspaper.
The choice to find the courage to do something occurs in everyday life. One regret I have from not having enough courage is when I was on holiday. It was one of those coach trips (which I generally enjoy however I do have a bit of a gripe with them as they feel too ‘touristy’ and set) and we went to a potters yard where we were given the choice do have a go ourselves. Then began an awkward silence, no one was volunteering. The next reaction was for the parents to transfer this awkwardness on the kids, pushing them to go and try. No one did, so we moved on. I just wish I had had the courage to just go and have a ‘play’. Even if it made me look completely useless I would have got more satisfaction out of it than those who never tried at all.
As in my story, the problem with not finding that courage is you don’t get the benefits from that in which you are hiding away from. Weather it is making a sculpture or taking the lead in someway there are so many benefits to be had with trying something different.
Once you push your self into this new mindset of trying new things then new opportunities might just present themselves. Ones which your old self wouldn’t have thought about in a thousand years. I believe that leads to a richer quality of life.
My advice to both myself and others is to keep an open mind and to have the courage break with the answers in which those closest would expect you to say.
